It consolidates a complex of 50 experimental ponds with a total area of nearly 7 ha and fish rearing facility equipped with flow through as well as recirculation systems primarily for keeping of early stages of various fish and crayfish species. In early 2013, the facility was updated by new rearing systems, laboratory and teaching rooms. Further, new outdoor raceway facility with 100 different tanks types for fish and crayfish available has also been put into operation.
Focus of research
The facility is used for researchers and students of individual laboratories to implement experiments mainly focused on development of new aquaculture breeding technologies with special focus on the following areas:
- intensive aquaculture methods including RAS;
- fish reproduction, including hormonal and environmental stimulation methods;
- development of rearing strategies for early stages of highly valued and endangered fish species including the optimization of environmental conditions and nutrition;
- applied aquaculture hydrobiology;
- feeding biology of fish in ponds as well as in free waters;
- influence of piscivore predators at fish rearing objects;
- biology and monitoring of native, non-native and invasive crayfish species;
- research of crayfish rearing and husbandry, including reproduction and reintroduction.
During last years, attention was dedicated to aquaculture and rearing technologies of piscivore (perch and pike perch) and riverine (rheophil) fish species such as common barb, vimba bream, nase in recirculating systems. A lot of experiments were carried out with regard to rescue breeding programs (especially for European crayfish). The knowledge gained from these trials is concurrently being introduced into practice.
