During 136 days internship, I mainly performed sampling tissues including liver, head kidney, and spleen, RNA extraction, making cDNA by reverse transcription, testing RNA integrity by gel electrophoresis, assembling real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) reactions, qPCR data evaluation, measuring lysozyme enzyme activity and total protein levels from blood plasma. Moreover, I joined one of the lab members to assist the measurement process of the liver antioxidant and intestine digestive enzymes activity. Besides, I attended a workshop to see the isolation of leukocytes from common carp head kidneys and measure the respiratory burst activity and nitric oxide production of the cells. I learned the artificial propagation of European catfish and I updated my knowledge about common carp artificial reproduction. Moreover, I participated in rotifer sampling from common carp rearing ponds. I would like to acknowledge Erasmus+, PPSŘ project, and Laboratory of controlled reproduction and intensive fish culture for financial support.

I was doing my Erasmus+ internship at Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e dell’Ambient (Università di Pavia, Pavia, Itálie) under the supervision of prof. Roberto Sacchi and doc. Gianluca Fea from 10th of October to 8th of November. The internship aims were to gain experience in investigating the distribution of pathogens of populations of freshwater crayfish located in North Italy. During the internship, I learnt to evaluate the distribution of the parasites and to detect infected specimens. One of the main goals of this internship was related to studying of Thelohania contejeani and Vairimorpha, most commonly known as the agent of “porcelain disease”, in populations of freshwater crayfish.
From 28th September to 7th September 2023 I was on a business trip to Hakodate, Japan, Hokkaido University, Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, where I served as an invited lecturer at the summer school.
During October 4. and 12. 2023, I visited the Mongolian University of Life Sciences in Ulanbator and lokality on Tengis river. The aim was to discuss the participation of our faculty in the upcoming three-year project financed by the Mongolian government, focusing on the artificial reproduction of taimen, lenok and Siberian grayling. Part of the project should also be participation in the teaching of fisheries to Mongolian students.
From 28th June to 1st July 2022, Abhipsha Dey have visited the International Convention on Biology of Fish in Montpellier, France. The international conference was held on behalf of American Fisheries Society. Abhipsha Dey has presented poster about “Diverse role of DNA repair genes and proteins on fish embryo development”.
From 17-20th October 2022, I thoroughly engaged in a series of professional-led lectures on fish nutrition and fish gut microbiota training course organized by Aquaculture & Fisheries (AFI), Wageningen University, Netherlands. The course covered a wide range of topics, including nutrient requirements, their effect on fish gut physiology, and the importance of the microbiome to fish health. I also participated in hands-on sessions on feed formulation and fish microbiome analysis. During the poster section, I shared my research results, titled “Nutritional and stable isotopic evaluation for various insect meals for European perch (Perca fluviatilis)”.
I'd like to thank the Erasmus+ and RVO ÚA Laboratoř for their financial assistance during this conference.

On December 6-8, 2021, Martin Pšenička and I attended a meeting of the AQUAEXCEL3.0 project, which took place in Faro, Portugal. The project meeting was held in a hybrid format, where only a fraction of people were present on-site, and most other partners communicated online. We both presented our contributions in WP5 (Martin Pšenička - germ stem cell) and WP6 (Petr Císař - welfare monitoring). Despite considerable limitations, the project meeting was beneficial, and the hybrid format worked surprisingly well from a technical point of view.

Species Distribution Models (SDMs) are growing in importance in the face of climate change, and understanding the response of species to climate change has become a priority for biodiversity conservation worldwide. In addition, these models are also widely utilised to assess the growing threat of biological invasion because can predict the potential distribution of the invasive species for the current and different future climate change sceneries based on greenhouse gas concentration pathway scenarios. Thus, SDMs can help to identify the regions where the efforts should be prioritised to minimise the potential impacts of biological invasions.
From November 7 to 13, Ismael Soto participated in the 8th edition of the Species Distributions Modelling course led by Professors Miguel Bastos Araujo and Babak Naimi in Evora (Portugal). In this course, we learned the fundamental concepts underpinning SDMs, describing some of the most prominent methods currently in use, and discussing the strengths and limitations of these models for different applications. In addition, we learned how to build the SDMs in the statistical software Rstudio using the package “sdm” built by the lecturers. Finally, we successfully built SDMs for 17 cetaceans species in the Atlantic Ocean for the current and three different potential climate change scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) for two different periods (2050 and 2070).
