Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Biochemistry

About the Laboratory

The Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Biochemistry (LECHB) is part of the Research Institute of Fisheries and Hydrobiology in Vodňany and part of Research program 2, “New" pollutants in the environment and their effect on freshwater ecosystems of the South Bohemian Research Center of Aquaculture and Biodiversity of Hydrocenoses (CENAKVA).

The laboratory focuses on the development and application of effective analytical methods for monitoring the occurrence of micropollutants, especially residues of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, hormonal substances, PFAS, UV filters, drugs, and new industrial contaminants, in various components of the aquatic environment, in wastewater and drinking water, and in soils.

Furthermore, through laboratory and field experiments, we study the impact of specific foreign substances and complex pollution of the aquatic environment on exposed organisms. As part of an expert workplace, the laboratory participates in clarifying emergency situations associated with significant pollution of the aquatic environment (e.g., Bečva 2020, 2025). Laboratory uses modern and most recent equipment capable of identifying even trace amounts of foreign substances to detect chemical compounds. The laboratory also identifies previously unmonitored substances whose presence in the environment may cause a health risk.

To identify risks associated with water pollution and provide solutions for improving water quality and aquatic ecosystems.

We conduct reliable, high-quality research based on teamwork, intensive cooperation with domestic and international research and application partners, and the use of modern equipment. We strive for maximum objectivity in interpreting the results of our research.

We develop effective sampling and analytical methods for the determination of known and identification of previously unknown micropollutants (pharmaceuticals, drugs, pesticides, PFAS, industrial contaminants, etc.) and their application in research and in cooperation with the application sphere.
