Our key activities and cooperation

Optimization of drinking water treatment technologies
We cooperate on improving final drinking water treatment technologies. This cooperation results in recommendations on how often to change or regenerate GAC filters in specific technologies (e.g., JVS, which supplies drinking water to 360,000 residents).

Drinking water quality monitoring
We design systems for continuous monitoring of raw drinking water quality based on the use of bioindicators, passive sampling, and non-targeted screening (NTS) (PVK, Želivská provozní, JVS – the most significant drinking water producers in the Czech Republic).

Evaluation of wastewater treatment efficiency
We assess the efficiency of micropollutant removal, perform legally required analyses of foreign substances in treated wastewater (Directive 2024/3019 on urban wastewater treatment), and participate in the creation of strategies for its implementation (ČEVAK, BVS, SOVAK).

Post-treatment ponds and aquaculture
We evaluate the effectiveness of micropollutant removal in post-treatment ponds and the risks associated with fish farming in these tanks (ČEVAK, aquaculture producers).

Contamination of agricultural products and groundwater
We identify the risks associated with the application of sewage sludge or contaminated irrigation (Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague).

Analysis of illegal drugs and legally restricted substances
We analyse wastewater and treated water for the presence of illegal drugs and legally monitored micropollutants (AČE, STU).

Occurrence of foreign substances in fish
We monitor the contamination of fish from open waters and issue recommendations for recreational anglers. We are currently conducting the first comprehensive study of the occurrence of PFAS in fish from important fishing grounds and production ponds in connection with the new limits set by Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/915 (Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, fishing ground users, aquaculture businesses).

National monitoring of the aquatic environment
We participate in the implementation of national monitoring of aquatic environment contamination, including monitoring of degradation products of foreign substances (Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, Povodí Labe s.p.).

Pilot studies of new contaminants
We carry out pilot studies focused on the occurrence of new industrial contaminants in the aquatic environment (e.g., COWI, Norway).

Fisheries management and monitoring
We carry out fish catches, sampling, ichthyological monitoring, and address issues related to fisheries management (Anglers unions, state administration, Povodí companies, CHMI).

Expert assessments of accidents
We prepare expert assessments to identify the causes of accidental fish kills and to identify the sources of pollution (e.g., Bečva 2020, Bečva benzene 2025, Odra 2024) (PČR, ČIŽP).

Transfer of know-how and methodology
We ensure the transfer of our know-how to operational laboratories and provide consultations in the field of environmental analysis (Povodí companies). Based on the results of our studies, we publish methodologies for practical use.
