Laboratory of Molecular, Cellular and Quantitative Genetics
About the Laboratory
The Laboratory of Molecular, Cellular and Quantitative Genetics (LMCQG) was established in 2008 by splitting the original Department of Fish Genetics and Breeding with a Breeding Station at the Research Institute of Fisheries and Hydrobiology in Vodňany, where it is still located today.
We are engaged in basic and applied research in genetics and breeding of freshwater fish species. At the same time, we participate in university teaching of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students in the fields of Fishery (BSc.), Fishery and Protection of Waters (MSc.), and Fishery (Ph.D.).
Our Values
The research is conducted for the development of long-term sustainable aquaculture, as well as for the protection of genetic resources and biological diversity of fish.
Our Expertise
Development of breeding programs, especially selective breeding of common carp and burbot, testing the performance traits of common carp and tench, and consulting activities for fishery practice.
At the request of fish farming companies, we perform polyploidy induction in fish using our own mobile hydrostatic pressure unit.
Conservation of fish genetic resources
We guarantee the conservation of autochthonous fish breeds and populations within the National Program for Conservation and Use of Animal Genetic Resources, established by the Ministry of Agriculture.
