Significant award for a young scientist from the FFPW USB

Martin Prchal, a young scientist from the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters at the University of South Bohemia, has achieved a significant success in the field of science. He won the first place in the competition of the Minister of Agriculture for young scientists for 2024, which is associated with a financial reward of 100 thousand crowns.

The award was given for his research published in a peer-reviewed scientific paper entitled "Genetic parameters and genomic prediction of resistance to koi herpesvirus disease using a low-density SNP panel on two Amur mirror carp populations". This research provides new insights into the genetic resistance of fish to disease, which is of great importance for fisheries and the conservation of aquatic ecosystems.

The award ceremony took place on 22 August 2024, at the 50th edition of Země Živitelka at the Exhibition Grounds in České Budějovice. Martin Prchal was presented with the award by the Minister of Agriculture Marek Výborný, who acknowledged his significant contribution to the development of science and research in agriculture. The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, and the Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, Marek Ženíšek, also joined in the congratulations and highlighted the innovative nature of Prchal's work.

The award from the Minister of Agriculture for young scientists is given annually and serves to support innovative projects that contribute to the development of Czech agriculture and sustainable management of natural resources.
