Workshop for nature protection

On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, another thematic workshop organized as part of the NAZV project Optimization of Feeding and Management of Pond Aquaculture (QK22010177) with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic took place in the lecture hall of the FFPW USB, IEEAIC in Vodňany. This time, the program focused primarily on issues of nature conservation and the environmental context of pond management.

The workshop was attended by about 20 experts and practitioners from the fields of fish farming, nature conservation, and water management. They discussed ways to reconcile intensive production with the sustainability of pond ecosystems.

Key topics included:

  • Balanced feeding of fish ponds and their nutritional requirements in relation to pollution – the presentation showed how excessive feed doses can affect water quality and the ecosystem.
  • Environmental assessment of feed supplements using the LCA method – assessment of environmental impacts throughout the production cycle.
  • Nitrogen and phosphorus flows from feeding – their impact on pond ecosystem services and maintaining balance in management.
  • Risks of nutrient imbalance in hypereutrophic ponds – examples of the negative impacts of overfertilization.
  • The invasive species of eastern minnow (Pseudorasbora parva) – highlighting its negative impact on water quality and the stability of pond ecosystems.
  • Pond cascades – possibilities for preventing problems with excess nutrients through proper management.
  • Composition and density of fish stocks – their impact on the biodiversity of pond ecosystems.
  • Feeding strategies of common carp during the season – findings on the use of natural food sources in production ponds.

The final discussion showed that linking environmental considerations with economic goals is possible and necessary for the future of Czech fish farming.
