TNA project in AQUAVISION laboratory

The Laboratory of Machine Vision in Aquaculture and Water Protection (AQUAVISION) hosted researcher Georgina Lea Fazekas from the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, HAKI, Research Center for Fisheries and Aquaculture, as part of the AQUASERV Transnational Access (TNA) programme. Her visit, from 14 to 25 September 2026, focused on the project “BEHAVioural data processing of REstoration-oriented STURGeon reared through different Environmental Enrichment strategies”.
Georgina’s research aims to determine the optimal level, timing of introduction, and duration of sustainable environmental enrichment for sterlet larvae and fry reared in aquaculture tanks. This research requires analysing the behaviour of fish exposed to different forms of environmental enrichment using standard tests, such as maze swimming and novel object tests.
The TNA project aimed to automate the processing of video recordings of fish behaviour in standardised tests and develop user-friendly software that could also be used to analyse data from future experiments. Data processing and software development followed a “learning by doing” approach, through which the visiting researcher learned the fundamentals of computer vision and image processing.
Access under the TNA programme was provided free of charge to the visiting researcher. AQUASERV covers the costs of experimental work, travel, and subsistence.
