Societal Relevance

The Head of the GFC, David Gela, Ph.D., has long served as the secretary of the Breeding Council for Fish Culture of the Czech Fish Farmers Association. The Council is responsible for ensuring the effective transfer of new knowledge in the fields of genetics and reproduction into breeding practice when introducing promising breeds, populations, and lines of economically important fish species, and it provides methodological guidance for breeding activities in fish culture.

The GFC cooperates with major fish producers in the Czech Republic (Rybářství Hluboká cz, s.r.o., Rybářství Nové Hrady, s.r.o., Krajské školní hospodářství České Budějovice, Rybářství Doksy, s.r.o., Klatovské rybářství, a.s., Dvůr Lnáře, spol. s r.o., Rybářství Lnáře, s.r.o., Blatenská ryba, spol. s r.o., Rybářství Tichý, s.r.o., and others).

For many years, the results of our commercial production of sac-fry of mirror carp have been used by major fish farmers in Poland associated within the national organisation Polski Karp. As part of international cooperation in science and research, we have exported free-swimming fry of common carp to Germany, Estonia, Lithuania, Mexico, and Vietnam; tench fry to Spain, Israel, and China; and European catfish fry to Estonia.

Our sturgeons are reared by farmers in Slovakia, Austria, Romania, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
