Day for Czech Nature at Hluboká Zoo: FFPW USB Team Presented Invasive Species and the Protection of Aquatic Ecosystems

On 13 June 2026, the all-day educational event Day for Czech Nature took place at Hluboká Zoo, where the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters of the University of South Bohemia (FFPW USB) hosted its own expert stand focused on the issue of invasive aquatic organisms. During the day, the zoo was visited by a total of 1,408 participants, who had the opportunity to learn about the activities of the REWMA project (BYCZ10-279) and obtain practical information on the risks associated with non-native species.
The FFPW USB stand offered visitors expert explanations on invasive species of crayfish and fish, their spread, and their impacts on aquatic ecosystems. A major attraction was the display of live non-native crayfish, including the signal crayfish, marbled crayfish, and spiny-cheek crayfish.
The programme also included explanations of pathways of introduction of invasive organisms, their ecological risks, and practical case studies. Emphasis was placed on raising awareness in the field of aquatic ecosystem protection, particularly on the importance of preventing the spread of invasive organisms and protecting populations of native species.
The faculty’s participation in this event significantly contributed to raising awareness of invasive species issues and supported the outreach activities of the REWMA project in the Czech–Bavarian border region.
