Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plants: Why Are Bacteria the Key to Clean Water?

Clean water does not begin in rivers and reservoirs. Its quality is already influenced by what we do at home – including how our domestic wastewater treatment plant operates and what we discharge into it every day.

The main work in a wastewater treatment plant is not done by pumps or tanks, but by billions of microorganisms. When provided with the right conditions, they can remove organic pollutants and nutrients from wastewater. How can you tell whether the bacteria in your treatment plant are working properly? What can harm them? And does it make sense to use products designed to replenish beneficial bacteria? These are the questions explored in this article.

Students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice (FROV USB) have also investigated the effectiveness of bacterial products. Their research, conducted with the support of ČSOB, showed that not all products work equally well and that choosing the right one can influence how quickly a disrupted bacterial community in a wastewater treatment plant recovers.
