Laboratory of Nutrition

Societal Relevance

We deliver solutions that link human health, sustainable food production, and regional economic competitiveness. By increasing the content of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids in fish meat (including the patented omega-3 carp), we contribute to improved population nutrition and prevention of lifestyle-related diseases.

At the same time, we reduce food waste by extending the shelf life of fish products using natural antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds and provide producers with practical recommendations for safe and palatable products.

From an environmental perspective, we implement circular approaches in aquaculture, including aquaponics, agricultural reuse of sludge, and the balanced feed concept in ponds. These measures close water and nutrient cycles, reduce nitrogen and phosphorus losses, and help fisheries adapt to drought and climate variability.

Our solutions are field-tested, economically feasible, and transferable to both small-scale and large-scale operations.

The laboratory strengthens human capital by educating students and professionals, supplying methodologies and data to municipalities and public authorities, and collaborating with industry on innovations that clearly benefit consumers. Through open partnerships, we accelerate the transfer of science into practice and support the development of local foods as an affordable, healthy, and sustainable source of animal protein.

We closely cooperate with Czech companies involved in fish farming, processing, and feed production, including for example Rybářství Lnáře, s.r.o., Rybářství Chlumec nad Cidlinou, a.s., Tilapia, s.r.o., and Nutrin, s.r.o.

Finally, LN staff organize professional training courses, workshops, conferences, and excursions each year, primarily for:

  • commercial and recreational fishers,
  • students of various disciplines,
  • the wider professional community.

The aim of these activities is to familiarize participants with the latest knowledge in sustainability, fish nutrition, and development of new aquaculture products.
