Fighting an army of clones: Is it possible to deal with a population of an invasive crayfish?

The marbled crayfish, an invasive species capable of reproducing without males, can quickly spread from a single individual and threaten local ecosystems. In Prague, it was first recorded in 2020 in a small pond, where it likely arrived from an aquarium hobby.

Thanks to the collaboration of experts, nature conservationists, fishermen, and the local municipality, repeated fish harvests, liming, and draining of the pond were carried out to suppress the population. The last individual was found in 2022, and no crayfish were detected in 2023–2025. The final outcome will be confirmed during the harvest in spring 2026.

This case highlights the importance of early detection, cooperation, and responsible behavior of the public toward keeping and releasing animals. More information can be found here.
