The Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, University of South Bohemia, Tomáš Policar, accepted an invitation to the podcast Trends in Sustainability, which is produced in cooperation with ČSOB, the organization [ta] Udržitelnost, and the Czech Podcasts portal. It is a business-oriented podcast with a leitmotif of consideration for the surrounding world.
Since 1950, humanity has increased commercial fishing from 20 to 120 million tons annually. This pressure, combined with climate change and pollution, threatens thousands of fish species. “Among marine species, 10–15% are endangered, and among freshwater species, it’s as much as a quarter,” said Tomáš Policar in the podcast.
The solution lies in fish farming, which already accounts for 40% of the fish consumed today. Thanks to its tradition of pond farming, the Czech Republic holds a strong position—producing 18–20 thousand tons of fish annually and ranking among the five largest producers of freshwater fish in Europe. However, the industry faces challenges such as rising water temperatures, extreme rainfall, and the need for innovation in farming practices.
Why are fish considered a superfood? How does fish farming help protect wild populations? And how is Czech fisheries adapting to climate change? Listen to the full interview with Tomáš Policar in the podcast Trends in Sustainability.
