New faculty videos

We create three new videos thanks to a grant from the Norwegian Funds in the Environment, Ecosystems and Climate Change programme.

1) Fish migration and barriers in rivers

Some fish species have an exceptional life cycle. They have to migrate thousands of kilometres to breed or find a more suitable place to live. But there are more than a million migration barriers on Europe's rivers. A video from the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice shows ways to free the chained rivers and give the fish a chance.

2) What can a pond do?

Ponds are not only used for breeding carp, but also for a number of other, so-called ecosystem functions. How can they help us fight the climate crisis? What do children think about ponds? What problems are ponds facing today and what are the experts at the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice doing about it?

3) Invasive topmouth gudgeon: East Asian hacker of pond ecosystems

The tiny topmouth gudgeon is a thorn in the side of conservationists and production fishermen alike. It reproduces rapidly and can turn a pond into a green mess in a very short time. Scientists from the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice are investigating to what extent the presence of this fish in ponds affects carp production and how to combat the unwanted invasive fish species.
