Algae may appear calm and beautiful, but some of them conceal a dangerous chemical arsenal. Under certain conditions, they produce toxins that threaten fish, animals, water quality, and human health. These phenomena, known as toxic aquatic blooms, are becoming increasingly frequent and intense as a result of climate change and nutrient pollution.
The new book published by Springer explores the fascinating world beneath the water’s surface and shows how algae use toxins as survival tools and how these substances affect entire ecosystems and society. The publication includes real-world case studies as well as the latest insights from biology and chemistry.
The book is co-authored by our research scientist MSc. Thora Lieke, Dr. rer. nat. – warm congratulations!
