Workshop for fish farmers

On Monday, September 8, 2025, a professional workshop focused on optimizing feeding and pond aquaculture management took place in lecture hall of the FFPW USB, IEEAIC Vodňany. The event was part of the NAZV project Optimization of Feeding and Management of Pond Aquaculture (QK22010177) with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic.

The workshop was attended by approximately 30 fish farmers from various fisheries and companies from across the country. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the latest research and practical findings presented by experts from the faculty and partner institutions. Topics discussed included:

  • The economics of Czech aquaculture – the presentation showed developments in recent years and highlighted the main trends and challenges facing the industry.
  • The use of fish raw materials and the development of new products – examples were given of how to better evaluate production and make fish products more attractive to customers. The presentation also included a tasting of products from Happy Fish, which, together with our faculty, has developed fish products from African catfish that even children enjoy.
  • Nutritional requirements of pond ecosystems – experts focused on the concept of balanced feeding and the quality of proteins and lipids in plankton, which carp filter through their gills.
  • Practical experience in breeding – ŠTIČÍ LÍHEŇ – ESOX, spol. s r.o. presented its approach to pike hatcheries and showed specific examples from practice.
  • Possible response to climate change – discussion on breeding lighter market carp in a two-year cycle as an alternative path for the future.
  • The role of microbiota and enzymes – recent research shows that they can significantly contribute to increasing feed efficiency.
  • Solving protein deficiency at the end of the season – recommendations on how to balance nutrition with regard to the quality of market carp.

The final part of the program consisted of an informal discussion over dinner, which provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and establish new collaborations.

The workshop showed that combining research and practice brings concrete benefits for everyday management and helps fish farmers face current challenges, including climate change and market demands.
