Rescue of freshwater mussels and clams at Lipno

The unfavourable hydrological situation of previous months and the rapid decline in water levels in recent weeks have lowered the level of Lake Lipno to a point where large numbers of freshwater mussels have been exposed on its bottom. The general public, employees of the Šumava National Park and Protected Landscape Area (PLA), and employees of Povodí Vltavy were involved in the rescue and transfer of these large bivalves. Given the length of the Lipno shoreline, this was a challenging task. Therefore, last Friday, in agreement with the PLA employees, we were tasked with surveying around the shores of the so-called small Lipno. Together with the students, we walked around the coast in very unfavourable weather and returned several thousand individuals of three species, namely Unio pictorum, U. tumidus and Anodonta anatina, to the water. Unfortunately, during the rescue transfer, the presence of the invasive Sinanodonta woodiana was confirmed. Many thanks go to bachelor's students Vít Houska and Jana Nekolová, and master's students Honza Škrabánek and Lukáš Beránek. Faculty employees who participated in the event include Zuzka Dvořáková, Ivana Samková, Kuba Kocour, Martin Bláha and Tonda Kouba.
