Workshop Workshop: Duckweed Research and Applications for the Circular Bioeconomy in Ireland, Stejskal

From June 8 to June 12, 2023, I made a business trip to University College Cork to participate in the Workshop: Duckweed Research and Applications for the Circular Bioeconomy in Ireland. I was invited to give a presentation on a novel multitrophic concept for the cultivation of fish and duckweed. In Ireland, the interest in duckweed research and applications is mostly driven by a strong focus on the transition to a more circular bioeconomy: an economy where waste is used as a resource. Consequently, the workshop had a strong emphasis on the use of duckweed as a tool for wastewater remediation and valorization, particularly in the form of protein. The workshop was very successful in bringing key stakeholders (academia and business) as well as national and international experts together for the day to discuss many issues around this topic. After the workshop, there was a discussion for further possibilities to develop a project focused on duckweed use as an element in the circular economy.
