Laboratory of Freshwater Ecosystems

Research Focus and Directions

The main objective of the laboratory’s research is a comprehensive study of freshwater ecosystems using multidisciplinary approaches.
To investigate the effects of key biotic and abiotic factors on aquatic organisms, we study not only fish and crayfish but also other aquatic organisms (macrozoobenthos, bivalves).
The tested factors include climate change, anthropogenic impacts (various types of habitat disturbance), and biological invasions.

Additional Methods and Approaches Used:

  • Ethological research of interspecific and intraspecific interactions
  • Chemical communication and social behaviour
  • Predator–prey relationship analysis
  • Field studies, monitoring, and observations
  • Rescue transfers and invasive species control
  • Stable isotope analysis
  • Proteomic analyses
  • Molecular genetic analyses
  • Physiological research focusing on reproduction and regeneration
  • Monitoring of crayfish heart rate
  • Respirometric analyses
  • Application of the above approaches in ecotoxicological studies

Crayfish and Fish in Basic and Applied Research

Key model organisms of our laboratory are crayfish and fish, studied in both basic and applied research. We also consider the role of other invertebrates and their mutual interactions in various aquatic ecosystems. The laboratory focuses on fundamental biological patterns and their transfer to natural processes under field conditions, as well as their subsequent application, including issues of sustainable aquaculture and the management of rheophilic fish species.

Practical Steps in Nature Conservation: Biomonitoring and Rescue Transfers

Last but not least, the laboratory actively contributes to raising public awareness by organizing educational events, biological monitoring, and rescue transfers of bivalves, crayfish, and fish. Biomonitoring of natural sites and rescue transfers serve not only to achieve core objectives but also as tools for communication with the public. We believe that these activities can help increase public engagement in nature conservation.
