Vodňany fishing days 2023 at the FFPW USB

The Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters USB participated as a traditional co-organizer in the 31st Vodňany Fishing Days (18th–20th May 2023) and once again brought a colourful program.

The faculty opened this event already on Thursday 18th May 2023 with educational programs for elementary schools from Vodňany. In the afternoon, we continued with a program for the public, when the book of our colleague Mgr. Miroslav Boček called Uršula´s journey home. We published this adventurous environmentally-tuned story thanks to the Norwegian Funds project (TO DISCOVER AND PROTECT: Endangered worlds of water ecosystem and its biodiversity – No. 3201400019, which was supported by the EEA and Norway Funds 2014-2021 – CZ-ENVIRONMENT program), which aims to improve the state of the aquatic environment with a focus on four current topics: 1. Invasive species in freshwater ecosystems, 2. fish migration and barriers on streams, 3. Importance of non-production functions of ponds and 4. sustainable forms of aquaculture.

Friday and Saturday were again in the spirit of education at the MEVPIS, when a number of interactive activities were added to the programs not only for schools but also for general public. We prepared workshops and technical-scientific activities for visitors with the “Objevárium” from České Budějovice, in which both children and adults turned into researchers and tried various physical experiments and creative activities with the help of lecturers.

The traditional highlight at our faculty was the FFPW USB Open Day on Saturday. Visitors could see our top scientific and research facilities, discover the microscopic world, learn about the unique breeding of sturgeons, experience a crayfish bite, or visit recirculation systems with river fish species.

In total, almost 2,000 people visited the faculty during the Vodňany Fishing Days 2023, so all that remains is to thank all the organizers, cooperating entities, the Norwegian Funds project for financial support and, last but not least, the faculty employees who introduced the public to their work.
