How Can Fish By-products Be Transformed into High-Quality Dog Food? A New Technology Developed by FFPW USB Offers a Sustainable Solution

Every year, fish processing generates thousands of tonnes of by-products, including heads, frames, trimmings, and gonads. These materials account for 50–60% of the total weight of processed fish and, despite being rich in high-quality proteins, lipids, and minerals, are largely disposed of as waste through rendering plants. This not only represents a considerable economic burden for fish processors but also results in the loss of valuable nutrients that could be further utilized.

To address this issue, researchers from the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice (FFPW USB) has therefore developed and verified a new technology for the production of sterilized fish sausages for dogs, based on the use of these fish by-products in combination with oatmeal and local vegetables. The technology was tested in cooperation with Tilapia s.r.o., a company specializing in the farming and processing of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), and Kateřinský dvůr s.r.o., where the production process was verified under commercial operating conditions.

The products underwent comprehensive evaluation, including analyses of nutritional composition, amino acid profile, mineral and fatty acid content, lipid oxidative stability, and microbiological safety. The results confirmed that the developed sterilised fish sausages are nutritionally valuable, microbiologically safe, and shelf-stable, while fully complying with European legislation governing canned pet food.

The project also demonstrated the significant economic and environmental benefits of the proposed technology. Valorising fish by-products substantially reduces biological waste, lowers disposal costs, and transforms low-value raw materials into products with high added value.

The developed technology is primarily intended for small and medium-sized enterprises engaged in aquaculture, fish processing, or pet food production. Because it relies on commonly available processing equipment, it can be readily implemented in practice and provides an innovative approach to integrating sustainable fish processing, waste reduction, and the production of high-quality locally sourced pet food.
